Super Legendary Brand Poulsen Skone & Co

In many well knowledgeable connoisseurs’ eyes, there is one brand you cannot miss and waist your money which is Poulsen Skone & Co. I always came across super fine shoes on Ebay and forums, but the information about this brand was not well circulated.

The thing I know is they were founded in 1890 as a west end bespoke shoemaker, but who found it, was he a shoemaker, who had worked there are all missing.

Fast into 1970s it went bankrupt for unknown reason.

Menswear haberdasher New & Lingwood had been cooperated with Poulsen Skone & Co for its bespoke shoe business and stepped in to incorporate Poulsen Skone & Co into its own premise. So sometimes the shoes made in New & Lingwood was labeled as Poulsen Skone & Co maybe as per customer’s request.

Although the brand was taken in, the people were all gone, New & Lingwood had to hire freelancer to make its bespoke shoes, and this freelancer is too good, George Cleverley himself! Until 1991, George Cleverley ended this cooperation because of his death.

Welt on its Bespoke shoes

New & Lingwood found the creations of George Cleverley was very popular and decided to release Ready To Wear collection with the most sought-after models. They chose Edward Green to produce this mass production shoes.

In a very long time, Poulsen Skone belonged to New & Lingwood while kept independently operated with its own design and marketing departments.

For a time, Poulsen Skone & Co had two collections, one is made by Edward Green for New & Lingwood, the other is private label for Alfred Dunhill but made in Italy.

The shoes offered to two brands are quite different.

New & Lingwood had more classic and conservative models, a blend of Edward Green and George Cleverley; Dunhill had a unique last and more contemporary designs.

In mid 90s many Dunhill’s shoes had label of Poulsen Skone & Co and the shoes were all made by Edward Green.

As Edward Green gained more prestigious reputation and the cost shot up. New & Lingwood (Poulsen Skone Co) moved to middle range brands such as Alfred Sargent, Grenson and the later longstanding partner, Crockett & Jones。

Telling from the last and size writing, Crockett & Jones for sure.

Today, the cooperation continued but Poulsen Skone & Co label is never seen as all shoes only mark New & Lingwood.
