An Interview with HUANG Yan, A Female Chinese Bespoke Shoemaker

Many leather shoes lovers should have seen Huang Yan and even had a lot of contact with her. My little sister who used to be Mattina’s Shanghai store is also. I met her in 2021, when she returned to China and had not formally joined Mattina. Because of her artistic background, she joined Mattina to start her own shoemaking journey.

I contacted her several times on the way to ask about the progress and when we could try her service. The answer has always been that it will take time. Precipitation to this year, finally a little loose, accepted my interview.

Let’s learn the story of this shoemaker.

In the leather shoes industry in recent 20 years, there are some famous Italian shoemakers. In my humble opinion, I think there are three, Stefano Bemer, Roberto Ugolini and Riccardo Bestetti. Although Silvano Lattanzi and Paolo Scafora are equally prominent as brands, they are not talked about as shoemakers alone.

My Shoe Collection – Hiro Yanagimachi

I had an interview with the famed Japanese bespoke shoemaker Hiro Yanagimachi. As the pioneer Japanese shoemaker studying in England, he is very kind and willing to bring up new younger shoemakers which is very respectable.

I am not so familiar with his MTO offerings, and the price is slightly higher than Yohei Fukuda if the same construction and details are chosen.
