I have been following Sartoria Tofani on Instagram for years. I just came across it and became so addicted to its floaty style.
It is a wonderful experience that I have an interview with the founder and the master, Davide Tofani.
Could you introduce yourself including hometown, age, family and hobbies?
I’m Davide Tofani, born and raised in Naples, Italy —a city steeped in the art of tailoring.
I come from a long line of tailors; my family has dedicated itself to this craft for generations. I’m proud to continue this legacy.
Outside the workshop I enjoy spending time with my family and indulging in classic passions—from art and history to enjoying the vibrant street life and cuisine of Naples.
What is your learning experience in tailoring?
Tailoring for me began as a childhood immersion in the family shop. I learned the craft under the watchful eye of my father. My father was an apprentice of Vincenzo Attolini. He is a master tailor who instilled in me the principles of perfection, precision, and the art of handcrafting.
This apprenticeship style, steeped in tradition, has been my education and continues to inspire every garment I craft.
Please describe your house style.
At Sartoria Tofani we embrace the true Neapolitan philosophy: our suits are light, soft, and structured to follow the natural lines of the body.
Our style avoids excessive padding, ensuring both elegance and comfort while maintaining a clean, refined silhouette—a perfect marriage of tradition and modern taste.
There are two types of tailors, one insists on his own style, the other says there is no style for everyone, so he designs a suitable style for each customer. Which type are you?
I believe that true tailoring is both an art and a personal service. While our house style is rooted in the Neapolitan tradition, I always strive to adapt each garment to the unique character and needs of the client. It’s not about forcing a signature style but rather about enhancing the individual’s personality with a perfectly fitted suit.
Who are you most admired tailors?
I admired my father and his master Vincenzo Attolini.
Furthermore, I have great admiration for the masters of our craft—those who have dedicated their lives to perfecting bespoke tailoring. I respect the pioneering work of tailors like my father and others who, through generations, have kept the Neapolitan tradition alive. Their relentless pursuit of excellence continues to inspire me every day.
How many people work in your workshop?
Just me, my brother Enea;
my son Aristide and my daughter Ginevra.
Our workshop is a close-knit team where each member is a skilled artisan.
While we remain small to ensure quality and attention to detail, every person in our atelier plays a vital role in creating the impeccable garments that define Sartoria Tofani.
Do you accept apprentices?
Unfortunately we don’t plan to accept apprentices.
To become a master tailor, how many years of working is needed?
While the journey is deeply personal, I believe it takes at least two to three decades of dedicated work—starting from the apprenticeship years through the period of refining one’s craft—to truly become a master tailor.
Every stitch, cut and every garment is a lesson learned over time.
Which countries do you host Trunk Shows?
We’ve had the pleasure of showcasing our bespoke creations worldwide—from major European cities to key locations in Asia and North America.
In recent years, we’ve expanded our trunk shows to include destinations like New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, Tokyo, and beyond, always bringing a taste of Naples with us.
