Development of Handmade Shoes

This is an appointment for me to talk about the development of handmade shoes in China and abroad in the past few years.

Firstly, I personally don’t like to use the term handmade shoes because this term is abused and not telling the truth. I prefer to use stitched shoes no matter it is handwelted, Goodyear welted or Blake stitched.

My opinion is biased because people always choose to absorb the information they want to see. I let you judge for yourselves.

I think the development of stitched shoes in recent years has been very prosperous.

There are countless brands that have emerged around the world, whether they are ready-made shoes or custom-made. There are both industrially produced and workshop types.

Many of these brands have been in the industry for a long time, and there are also new entrants.

Some are building their own brands after years of making private label for high fashion houses and use “value for money” as selling point. I must stress again that I don’t like to use this word because it is more like a buzz word. The point I admire is that the products are more traditional and classic with better quality.

I also met some factories that originally made cemented shoes, and now they are gradually turning to stitched shoes. Maybe they have seen the momentum of this niche product is better.

Then there is the rise of some workshops, they are more likely to push some of the original custom elements and designs to the market. I think they are the ones that make the market of formal leather shoes more dynamic and have more beautiful designs.

Bespoke shoemakers are springing up and the top ones are very sought after around the world. Although this market is still a niche, everyone can obtain their information and they are no longer limited to insiders.

The phenomenon I described above can be seen in almost every country. I think these phenomena should show that stitched shoes are getting more attention and recognition. The reason?

I do not very much approve the notion of consuming upgrade. Because people can buy so much more expensive goods from fashion houses rather than these classic things.

I still tend to think that under this general trend of casualization of clothing, there are still many counter-currents, rebels, who do not want to be held hostage by the street culture and wish to seek refuge in the classics. This is not only a choice of goods, but also a psychological and cultural expression.

The classics are actually also swayed by fashion, but the changes will be much smaller. Moreover, those who know how to choose and know why they choose can shine eternally in the dramatic changes of fashion.

Passing on to future generations? That is a huge plus! I need to buy one pair of stitched shoes!
