Types of Derby Shoes

Derby is a very popular shoe type as it is more casual than oxford so easier to pair with outfits. But not so many people notice there are so many types of Derby shoes.

Plain Toe Derby

Berwick

This derby would have just the Vamp area and would not contain any decorative construction such as brogue or Cap Toe. All colors can be used in this style and the most casual option is suede. In Austria, black patent leather derby is sometimes even worn together with Black Tie or White Tie.

Cap Toe Derby

Cap Toe derby may or may not have Brogues, even if it does, it will only be on the edge of Cap Toe. Sometimes you can see Medallion, but usually there is none.

Wingtip Derby

Carlos Santos

The Wingtip is a design that using Brogue to form a shape on pattern, some Wingtips are long and go all the way to the heel, some are shorter and stop at the widest part of the shoe. This is a very casual style, but it is also the one that works best with a variety of outfits.

Wholecut Derby

Wholecut is extremely elegant.

Apron Toe / Moc Toe Derby

This is not a good translation, in fact, it is not so rare, but the name is used by very few people. It is either in the Vamp that place deliberately sewing an extra layer of skin, or Cap Toe that place.

This is to add a layer of skin in the Apron
And this one is adding a layer to the Cap Toe

Split Toe Derby

This one is actually a very common style as well. And the name is easily misunderstood by people with Norwegian construction.

White Buck

Alden N6439

It is an anomaly because in terms of style it is the plain derby, but because at first this shoe was made of deerskin and was white, it got its name. It is less common in Europe and is an American invention. Now it is also made with white suede.
