Suits Made in Canada

Speaking of clothing manufacturing, the whole world think that China is cheap and of low quality. Objectively speaking, it used to be true, because we were more concerned about volume and low cost, but today, such prejudice is untenable. When it comes to other countries, such as Italy, people will think that high labor content is synonymous with high prices. And if it’s made in France, it’s a work of art, a top product.

So, what about Canada? Speaking of this country, as a clothing producer, what is your impression?

My personal feeling is that it should be high quality and high price?

The answer doesn’t seem very accurate. Canada is not a manufacturing power, but the garment manufacturing industry is not bad. Why? Because its cost is lower than that of the United States, and it seems to be a little higher than that of Mexico, it has become the first choice for the production of suits in North America.

There used to be many large and small, but there were three large-scale and well-known factories (not really retail brand).

Coppley

Founded in 1883, this family has a long history and is prominent. Founder George Coppley is a politician. Together with four other entrepreneurs, he founded Coppley brand. At the time of its establishment, the main customers were all politicians and entrepreneurs with similar status.

The rapid development took place in the 1960s and 1970s, because in addition to selling their own suits, they were also represented by many American and European clothing brands.

In the early 1990s, the company entered the American market. The advantage is to deliver tailor-made suits within seven working days. This was achieved by the inclusion of a lot of computer-aided and industrial production.

Coppley’s fabrics are mostly Italian. Because the quantity is not bad, we will also develop exclusive products with the fabric factory.

Peerless

Peerless Clothing Inc was founded in 1919. There is not much information about the company’s early development, but it took off in 1989 and was also related to the United States.

Because on January 1, 1989, the free trade agreement opened the American market, Canadian manufacturers can rely on the cost advantage to quickly occupy the market.

Alvin Segal, the president of the company, hired Ronny Wurtzburger as the president of Peerless Clothing U.S.A. Both of them are fanatics of machine production, so they combined a lot of investment in machines and technology with retraining of employees to produce high-quality and low-cost products.

Founded in 1923 and headquartered in Saint Laurent, Quebec, a manufacturer of men’s customized clothing, filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and finally closed down.

This company has also contracted for many American brands, but because it is always at the back end, fewer people know it, and now it is bankrupt, and the information is nowhere to be found.
